Huntington’s disease

December 8th, 2011 Posted in General

Caregiving can become time-consuming and mentally and physically exhausting. Caring for somebody with HD, especially if you are a lone caregiver, will become increasingly so.
Huntington’s disease (HD) is an incurable, adult-onset, autosomal dominant inherited disorder associated with cell loss within a specific subset of neurons in the basal ganglia and cortex.
A genetic test can be done on the 11th week of pregnancy. The test will determine whether the embryo has the faulty gene. Genetic counseling is an integral part of the process.
Laboratory animals, such as mice, are being bred in the hope of duplicating the clinical features of HD and can soon be expected to help scientists learn more about the symptoms and progression of the disease.
